Coimbatore and the Kongu Belt: Tamil Nadu's Most Competitive Electoral Region
Date Published

The Kongu belt — comprising the districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Salem, Namakkal, and parts of Dharmapuri — is arguably Tamil Nadu's most politically complex electoral region. With 45 assembly constituencies, it is the largest zone in the state by seat count, and its multi-party dynamics make it a critical factor in every state election.
Demographics and Economy
The Kongu region is dominated by the Gounder (Vellalar) community, a dominant agricultural and industrial caste group. The region is home to Tamil Nadu's textile and spinning mill industry centred in Coimbatore and Tiruppur, as well as engineering and agro-processing clusters in Salem and Erode. This industrial base gives Kongu voters a distinct set of economic concerns compared to the agrarian delta or the urban Chennai constituencies.
The PMK Factor
The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), representing the Vanniyar community, has historically been influential in parts of the Kongu belt, particularly in northern Kongu. The party has served as a kingmaker ally to both DMK and AIADMK at different elections. In 2021, PMK contested as part of the AIADMK alliance and won 5 seats.
BJP's Growing Presence
The Kongu belt has seen the BJP make inroads that have not been replicated elsewhere in Tamil Nadu. The party's 4 seats in 2021 all came from this region, driven by the strong Hindutva-leaning Gounder community vote and the organisational work of local BJP units. Coimbatore South and Kavundampalayam are among the constituencies where the BJP has polled competitively.
DMK's 2021 Strategy
Despite the BJP and PMK presence, DMK made significant gains in the Kongu belt in 2021, winning seats in Coimbatore, Salem, and Erode that had previously been AIADMK strongholds. Post-2021, the party has invested in organisational expansion in this region ahead of the expected 2026 election.
